Did Thomas Tuchel Cost England the World Cup? His Defensive Gamble Under Fire

Thomas Tuchel's tactical decisions have come under intense scrutiny following England's dramatic 2-1 defeat to Argentina. After Anthony Gordon gave England the lead, Tuchel gradually reshaped his team into a back five, introducing extra defenders in an attempt to protect the advantage. Instead, Argentina dominated possession, piled on the pressure, and scored twice in the closing stages to reach the World Cup Final.

The decision immediately sparked debate among supporters and pundits, many arguing England became too passive and invited unnecessary pressure from Lionel Messi and Argentina's attack. Reports also suggested some senior England players were unhappy with how defensive the team became after taking the lead. Tuchel, however, rejected the criticism.

"We decided to go to a back five because the gaps were far too open."

He also insisted the move was made to deal with Argentina's attacking quality rather than simply defend the lead.

"No regrets. We deserved to be 1-0 up. We played one of our better matches... We couldn't bring it over the line."

Not everyone agreed with the criticism.

Former England international Phil Neville defended Tuchel, arguing that elite managers have often protected narrow leads with similar tactics and comparing the approach to Sir Alex Ferguson's pragmatic style at Manchester United.

Whether the defeat was caused by Tuchel's tactical switch or Argentina's relentless quality will continue to be debated. What is certain is that England's decision to retreat allowed the defending champions to seize control, and Argentina made them pay in the closing moments.
